Days in the Land of Red Walls

So here I stand, at the gates of College
Feeling numb on farewell eve
Friendships, romances and heartbreaks
These red walls have witnessed it all and more.

Funny how a place could mean so much, I wonder
As I recount my days spent here
Five long years. Long, and yet didn't they pass so fast?
With one thing remaining constant: the poor WiFi connectivity!

The red fort at Manalimukku with moral policers aplenty
The dreaded red place with unbearable heat
Horrible WiFi, oily mess food and all that lot
'Twas the inevitable doom at the end of every lazy semester break.

Constant denial and a general lack of excitement on every return
Till a week into the new semester and the routine kicked in again
And slowly you'd blend in again, find fun and joy
Within the brick red walls.

All the celebrations that happened here
All the journeys that began from here
All the memories I'll be taking from here
From the land of the red walls- Oh, they're too many.

From the days spent huddled together in the dorm
Or the humble beginnings
To the wonderful and cozy nests of Annexe
To the loud and crazy Main Hostel. We've seen everything.

From the friends who've been there since day one
To the ones who came along the way and stuck till date.
From blabbering for Political Science presentations
To blabbering for class moot courts. Maybe, some things never changed.

From the naive 18 year old, excited about starting college
To the given up 20 year old who couldn't wait to get out
To the clueless 21 year old who just went with the flow
To the 22 year old who cannot imagine leaving. Haven't I come a long way?

Love it, or hate it. The land of the red walls is a place like no other.
One learns to live despite it.
One learns who matter and who do not.
One learns a little bit about life and love. One comes to love it eventually.

Leaving a place that's become my second home is hard.
Leaving my comfort cocoon, waving bye to friends
And stepping into the outside world as a confused adult is hard.
Maybe the phrase "end of an era" is no exaggerated clichè after all.

  1. Awesome poem. Aptly sums up the general feeling about the place.

    1. Thanks a lot, Apoorv! It does feel weird to know there is no going back.
